The Northumbria show on Sunday 5 June turned out to be a resounding success, with 22 students showcasing their work on the catwalk.

The carefully selected soundtrack and accompanying video backdrop gave the show a really exciting atmosphere; every collection had its own handwriting and style. This truly is what Northumbria does best: creating innovative and experimental fashion which reflects every student’s personality and allows for diversity.

Julie Yeung

Kicking off the show was Julie Yeung, with a kimono-inspired womenswear collection. The use of colour blocking and soft jersey fabrics gave the collection a sophisticated feel which really captured the essence of oriental design.

Deborah Harkins

Deborah Harkins followed with beautifully crafted menswear pieces which revisited British arctic exploration. The use of sheepskin and wool and attention to detail created a really considered collection, honing in on practicality but with a modern, high-end twist.

Katy Jarvis

Katy Jarvis’ Indian-inspired textile collection combined print and texture produced some fabulous pieces which really captured the essence of her theme. The embellishment and leather details added a luxurious feel and enhanced the beauty of the garments.

Maria Choumanidis

Maria Choumanidis brought colour and fun to the show with a collection inspired by cross-stitch. The use of different knit patterns in panelling with contrast tones really worked and showed how exciting knit can be.

Ellen Barnes

Ellen Barnes took her theme from the 1950s – her garments were beautifully crafted and the monotone colour palette gave her collection a feel of class and luxury. Her jumpsuit was particularly successful; it brought her theme into the 21st century in a very wearable way.

Carl Illingworth

Carl Illingworth brought an exciting end to the show with his collection which combined influences from the ancient turkish army with handcraft. The use of contrasting fabrics, weaving and embellishment with oversized pearls created a Pugh-esque feel that said something new and exciting about menswear. It was announced yesterday that Carl is a finalist in the Gala show today. Well done Carl!!!
